Steam Cleaning vs Dry Cleaning: Which Does Your Carpet Need?

Hot water extraction or low-moisture dry cleaning? An honest Glasgow guide to which carpet cleaning method suits your fibre, and why.

Advice is free · Call 07342 840056

Hot water extraction (what most people call steam cleaning) is the deeper clean and is what most carpet manufacturers specify for warranty purposes — it suits synthetic carpet, wool blends, heavy soiling and pet odour, and takes two to four hours to dry. Low-moisture dry cleaning suits viscose, sisal, seagrass and commercial floors that must reopen within the hour, but will not reach the base of a heavily soiled pile or fix pet odour. We carry both on every van, so the method is chosen when we see your carpet rather than decided by what we happen to own.

Ask three carpet cleaning companies in Glasgow which method is best and you will get three answers, each one conveniently matching the machine that firm already owns. Here is the honest version.

There are two families of method: hot water extraction (what almost everyone calls steam cleaning) and low-moisture or dry cleaning. Neither is universally better. The right one depends on the fibre, the level of soiling and how fast the room has to be back in use.

Hot water extraction (steam cleaning)

Hot solution is injected into the pile under pressure and immediately vacuumed back out along with the suspended soil. It is the deepest clean available and the method the overwhelming majority of carpet manufacturers specify for warranty purposes.

Best for: synthetic carpet, wool blends, heavy soiling, pet odour, allergen removal, anything that has not been cleaned in years.
Trade-off: two to four hours dry time.

Dry carpet cleaning (low-moisture)

Dry carpet cleaning — also sold as low-moisture or encapsulation cleaning — works a compound or crystallising polymer into the pile with a brush. It binds to the soil and is vacuumed away. Very little water is involved, which is the whole point of it.

Best for: delicate natural fibres, viscose, sisal and seagrass, commercial floors that must reopen within the hour, and interim maintenance between deep cleans.
Trade-off: it does not reach the base of a heavily soiled pile, and it will not fix pet odour.

Carpet shampooing — and why we do not do it

Rotary shampooing with a foaming detergent was the standard forty years ago. The problem is residue: unless the shampoo is fully rinsed out, it stays in the pile, stays sticky and attracts soil faster than before. A carpet 'shampooed' in Glasgow in January often looks dirtier by March than it did before it was done. If you want the shampoo effect without the penalty, that is exactly what pre-spray plus extraction plus a neutralising rinse delivers.

Carpet dry cleaning vs steam cleaning: which does your carpet need?

For the vast majority of Glasgow homes: hot water extraction, once every twelve months. For a viscose rug, a sisal stair runner, or an office that cannot close: low-moisture. We carry both a truck-mounted system and a portable extraction unit on every van, so we are not selling you the method we happen to own — we pick it when we see the carpet.

Steam Cleaning vs Dry Cleaning — your questions answered

Do you use steam cleaning or dry cleaning?
Both — we pick the method to suit the fibre. Hot water extraction (what most people call steam cleaning) is the deepest clean and what manufacturers recommend for most synthetic and wool-blend carpet. Low-moisture dry cleaning suits delicate natural fibres, and commercial floors that need to be back in use within the hour.
How long does a carpet take to dry?
Two to four hours for most rooms. We use powerful extraction that pulls the vast majority of the moisture straight back out, and we bring air movers for anything heavier. You can walk on the carpet in socks almost immediately; we just ask you to keep shoes off until it is fully dry.
Is hired supermarket equipment any good?
It applies far more water than it can recover, which leaves the carpet wet for a day or more and the soil sitting in the underlay. It also uses detergent with no rinse stage. It is better than nothing on a small fresh spill, and worse than nothing on a whole room.
How much does carpet cleaning cost in Glasgow?
As a guide, a single bedroom is £30–£45, a living room £40–£65, hall, stairs and landing £60–£90, rugs from £25 and a three-seat sofa £70–£95, with a £60 minimum call-out. We publish ranges rather than one flat figure because the real number depends on room size, fibre and how long the soiling has been there. Tell us the rooms on the phone, or send a WhatsApp photo, and we will confirm your exact price free — and it is fixed from the moment you accept it, never changed on the day. Use the quote calculator on this page for a realistic range in about ten seconds.
