Carpet Cleaning Advice from Glasgow Technicians

Straight answers on prices, stains, pet odour and how often carpets really need doing — written by the people holding the wand.

These guides are written from what we actually see on Glasgow floors, not from a content brief. They tell you what a job costs before you ring anyone, what you can fix yourself, and — just as often — when to stop before you make a stain permanent. If a guide ends with "call a professional" it is because the alternative genuinely makes things worse, not because we are selling something.

Most people arrive at one of these pages mid-problem: something has just been spilled, a landlord inspection is on Friday, or the hall carpet has gone a colour that no amount of vacuuming shifts. So each guide leads with the answer and explains afterwards.

Short answers

If you only came for the one fact

The headline answer from each guide, in a sentence or two.

What does carpet cleaning cost in Glasgow?
Typically £30–£45 for a single bedroom and £40–£65 for a living room, with a £60 minimum call-out. Hall, stairs and landing is £60–£90 and a whole three-bedroom house £140–£200. Read the full guide →
How often should carpets be cleaned?
Every 12 to 18 months for an average household, 9 to 12 months with pets or small children. Check your carpet warranty too — many require professional hot water extraction at a set interval. Read the full guide →
How do you get red wine out of a carpet?
Blot straight down with a clean white cloth, never rub, and work from the outside in. Cool water only — heat sets the tannin permanently. Avoid bleach and oxygen powders on wool. Read the full guide →
Why does pet smell keep coming back?
Because it is in the underlay, not the pile. Urine soaks through and crystallises, then reactivates with humidity. Only an enzyme treatment applied to the depth the urine reached fixes it. Read the full guide →
Is hiring a carpet cleaning machine worth it?
For a small fresh spill on synthetic carpet, yes. For a whole room, wool carpet, pet odour or anything ground in, no — a hire machine puts in more water than it can recover and has no rinse stage, so the soil ends up in the underlay and the detergent stays in the pile. Read the full guide →
Do I need professional cleaning at the end of a tenancy?
Carpet condition is the most commonly disputed deposit deduction, and a dated professional receipt naming the property is the evidence that settles it. Book it two or three days before the inspection, not the morning of. Read the full guide →

What we do not write about

There is no shortage of carpet cleaning content online recommending vinegar, baking soda, shaving foam and hairspray. Some of it is harmless. A fair amount of it causes damage we are then called out to fix — bleach and oxygen powders stripping dye out of wool, hairspray setting ink into the fibre, and supermarket "stain sticks" leaving a sticky residue that pulls dirt back to exactly the spot you cleaned.

So these guides stick to what we have seen work on real floors, and they say plainly when a problem is damage rather than dirt. A cigarette burn, a bleach mark, a tear or a sun-faded patch is not a cleaning job, and no technique or product changes that. Knowing which one you have saves you both the money and the afternoon.
